Disney+ Streaming Hit 50 Million Subscribers

Over the last two months, the streaming service’s audience increased by 20 million subscribers

Disney+ reached 50 million subscribers, announced the company on its official website. Only two months ago the service had almost twice fewer subscribers, 28,6 million.

This speedy growth is connected to Disney+ launches around the world. On April 2nd, the streaming service entered the Indian market and gained 8 million new subscribers. In India, Disney+ works in cooperation with another local streaming service, Hostar, which also belongs to Disney .

At the beginning of this week, on April 7th, Disney+ also rolled out to 8 new European countries: the UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Austria. Due to the quarantine, the company promised to use reduced bandwidth to reduce the strain on broadband networks.

“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this yearю Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+,” said Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International Kevin Mayer.

Disney+ was launched only five months ago. To compare, a popular streaming service Netflix which has been on the market for more than 20 years, has 167 million subscribers.

Although there are plenty of streaming services on the market, Disney has a lot of valuable cards in its hand, reports TechCrunch. Disney owns an extensive catalog of excellent, premium content. Also, it has facilities to produce significantly more content than Amazon, Apple, or even Netflix.

In response to the COVID-19 and cinemas closing, Disney+ started bringing upcoming films that haven’t been seen yet. For instance, it will show American fantasy “Artemis Fowl” that was meant to debut in theatres in May 2020.
