Twitter Faces a $250 Million Fine

Twitter did not tell people it was using their contacts to target advertising

The US Federal Trade Commission can fine Twitter up to $250 million for using users’ personal data. The social network reported that on July 28, the commission sent her a complaint for violating the 2011 agreement.

Under the agreement, Twitter undertook to openly inform users about how it protects their personal information.

But it turned out that from 2013 to 2019, Twitter used users’ phones and e-mail addresses without warning to target their ads. The company announced this only in October last year, but called the act a “coincidence” and a “mistake.”

The US Federal Trade Commission believes that in this way Twitter has misled users, writes The Verge.

According to Twitter, for such a violation, the company could be fined at least $150 million, and in the worst case, the amount could reach $250 million.
